Alzheimer's disease

Alzheimer’s is a dementing disease with gradual loss of a specific population of cholinergic neurons that eventually causes profound memory loss. This neuron damage also destroys the ability to learn, reason, and make judgments. Symptomatic medications improve function, but do not slow the progressive loss of neurons. An estimated 4.5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease. The number of Americans with Alzheimer’s has more than doubled since 1980.
