Albuquerque, N.M.-(Business Wire)-- October 7, 2002. Maas BiolAB has received Cyclosporin Neuroprotection patent 209398 from the Mexico Patent Office. Patent coverage extends to the 100 million Mexican people who could benefit from the promise of the first effective treatments for traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Huntington's, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease. Cyclosporin is in NIH sponsored human trials in the USA for closed head injury. Published preclinical studies by Maas scientists and independent research groups show cyclosporins to be protective in neurodegenerative diseases. Cyclosporins work by protecting the mitochondria and halting detrimental biochemical cascades.

Maas BiolAB and partners are developing cyclosporins, analogs and formulations with improved activity and safety profiles for neurological diseases. The Mexico patent completes Maas' North American Free Trade Association IP coverage including Canada and the USA to encompass a population of over 400 million people. Patents are also held in Australia, New Zealand and Africa. Maas BiolAB is a privately held Swedish-American neuropharmaceutical corporation. NeuroPharma AB in Lund, Sweden is a wholly owned subsidiary.
