China Patent for Cyclosporin Neuroprotection Granted to Maas BiolAB ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. USA-- (BUSINESS WIRE)—June 4, 2004--Maas BiolAB is granted Cyclosporin Neuroprotection patent number 125786 by the China State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO). The population of the People’s Republic of China is 1.3 billion. Cyclosporin is the only drug in development as a neuroprotectant drug that directly protects the mitochondria in neurons from attack. Mitochondria are the energy generators of all human cells, including central nervous system neurons. By protecting brain mitochondria so that they function even when under attack, cyclosporin keeps the brain’s neurons alive. Cyclosporin neuroprotection has been validated by independent laboratories in a large number of positive studies across the spectrum of neurological disease models including traumatic brain injury, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This Chinese patent joins Maas’s already granted 35 world patents for Cyclosporin Neuroprotection, including cyclosporin analogs, in North America, Europe, Russia, Africa and Antipodes. Maas BiolAB, LLC is a privately held neuropharmaceutical corporation based in Albuquerque, NM, USA developing cyclosporin neuroprotection drugs for the brain diseases of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Huntington’s and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). NeuroPharma AB is a Maas corporate and research partner developing NeuroSTAT™, a proprietary non-toxic intravenous cyclosporin formula to treat traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury and stroke. NeuroPharma AB is located in the Medicon Valley biotechnology center of southern Sweden, and has research affiliation with the laboratories of the Wallenberg Neuroscience Center, Lund University.
